NEW FALCON: E-Gas customers forgotten in FG celebrations (February 2008)

The FG Falcon is not all good news. LPG buyers will have to soldier on with little new to see for their money

Ford has long portrayed its Falcon range has having non-petrol options, in particular LPG or 'E-Gas' in the Ford lexicon. But if there's a chink in the new FG Falcon range's armour -- it's the lack of progress on the alternate fuel front.

Anybody who expected to see a turbodiesel FG at launch is a fair target for a shady property salesman, but it was reasonable to assume Ford would have had some goodies on hand for its loyal base of E-Gas customers. The reality is, that's not the case.

Essentially, the E-Gas equipped naturally-aspirated I6 and its BA-vintage four-speed auto are carried over into the FG.

As this news is penned prior to Ford's official unveiling and model line-up announcement, it's not clear exactly what E-Gas models Ford will offer, nor is it clear whether the maker will equip its E-Gas fuelled vehicles with features like stability control for the first time.

There may be a clue, however. Ford has announced it will launch a BF MkIII version of the wagon in May at the same time as the FG range's roll out (more here). The MkIII wagon will get stability control as standard equipment. Ford has confirmed that an E-Gas version of the 'new' wagon will be offered (probably in June) though it has not specified whether it will get DSC.

Mechanical changes to the E-Gas FG sedan and utes are essentially limited to those required for the engine and transmission's installation into the new FG Falcon architecture. That is: new inlet and exhaust systems; a re-tuned throttle map and "optimised engine calibrations".

The E-Gas FG's claimed power and torque peaks are also virtually unchanged. Peak power of 156kW is now at 4750rpm (was 5000) and max torque is 371Nm at 2750rpm (unchanged).

No fuel consumption claims have yet been published for the E-Gas FG models.
