Mazda has cut between $1750 and $3920 from the price of its medium car segment stalwart

Mazda Australia has slashed between $1750 and $3920 from the recommended retail pricing of its medium car, the Mazda6. The surprise announcement came earlier this afternoon.

Mazda Australia boss, Doug Dickson, announced the discounts, saying the repositioning was aimed at drawing private buyers back into the medium car segment. He denied the move was in response to any specific entrant into the marketplace, but rather it was intended to cement the 6's position in the segment.

The price discounting applies across the Mazda6 range. Effective today, the Mazda6 range now kicks off at $27,990 for the manual Limited sedan -- a $1750 discount off the launch price of the car. The top Mazda6 model, the auto Mazda6 Luxury Sports hatch is priced at $42,990 -- a $3920 discount.

Pricing across the Mazda6 range is detailed below.

Mazda says there will be no changes to the current specification. It will offer existing owners of the second-generation Mazda6 a package of free scheduled servicing and extended warranty as a sweetener.

The period of servicing will depend on the grade of vehicle already purchased. Only top-of-the range Luxury Hatch buyers will receive a warranty extension.

Mazda launched the second generation 6 Down Under earlier this year (more here). Since that time the car has averaged between 920-950 units per month -- just short of the company's initial sales target of 1000 units per month. Dickson says with the new price points the maker has revised its sales target up to around 1100 units per month.
